This study explores why some high-risk drinkers avoid No and Low Alcohol (NoLo) products as alternatives to regular alcohol. Using data from the 2022 Global Drug Survey, researchers analyzed responses from 33,033 participants to understand motivations and barriers to NoLo use.
Findings show that while over half (52.2%) of participants had used NoLo products in the past year, high-risk drinkers were less likely to do so. Many drink for intoxication and feel that NoLo products lack enjoyment or satisfaction. Social pressure, cost, and low awareness were also key barriers. Some drinkers viewed NoLo as a tool to reduce alcohol intake, while others worried it might encourage habitual drinking.
The study suggests that offering NoLo options alone is not enough to reduce alcohol consumption. Instead, addressing social norms, increasing awareness, and creating alcohol-free spaces may be more effective in shifting behavior.
Reflection for FASD Prevention Facilitators:
How can NoLo products fit into FASD prevention messaging? What role do they play in shifting public perceptions about alcohol use during pregnancy?
