NeuroDevNet: FASD

NeuroDevNet, a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE), is dedicated to understanding brain development and to helping children and their families overcome the challenges of neurodevelopmental disorders.

The Network investigators seek to shed light on the causes of neurodisabilities, and to share this knowledge with health care professionals, policy makers, and communities of interest. The partners in academia, the community, not-for-profit sector, industry, and government, NeuroDevNet works across traditional disciplinary boundaries and sectors to ensure their findings are translated into tangible diagnostic, preventative, therapeutic, social, economic, and health benefits for all.

NeuroDevNet’s current research projects focus on autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, supported by collaboration with Core services in neuroethics, neuroinformatics, and knowledge translation.

NeuroDevNet has produced a series of 4 videos on FASD and related issues, give them a watch!

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the result of maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. FASD is a disability, and these children are not just “bad” children with behaviour issues. They have permanent brain damage. The First Nations communities have an important message to share.

FASD is a physical disability, and NOT a behaviour issue. The brain has been damaged by alcohol prenatally.
